Diesel-defeating Fuel Economy
Ford is rolling out its new 2021 F-150 offering including many of the same options as last year, however what sets them apart this year is their new Hybrid 3.5L PowerBoost V6 twin-turbo engine helped by a 35 kW electric motor.
Ford’s new hybrid technology is different compared to previous drive-trains seen in competitors. It better influences the actual movement of the vehicle. The accessory belt which runs off the crankshaft better conserves energy lost during stop-and-go movements, contributing to better in-town fuel efficiency.
With respect to highway mileage, the range on this 115L fuel tank can go 1,130km on a single fill-up with the assistance of the hybrid PowerBoost system.
Overall the fuel efficiency that can be expected from the new F-150 Hybrid is around 11L/100km, and even lower than that with some of the more conservative engine options.
The other 5 options seen in the 2020 Ford F-150 are going to be available as well with some slight improvements to torque and power of about 5 HP and 10 ft-lbs. However a 10-speed automatic transmission will come standard on all models, allowing greater gear ratio efficiency.
Towing Capacity: How Strong Is It Really?
This new F-150 offering from Ford can be expected to output more than 450 HP and 500 ft-lbs of torque, creating a new standard for half-tonne hybrid pickups to follow.
Proud owners of this beast can expect to have between 12,000 and 14,000 lbs of towing capacity depending on the offering, the hybrid option leaning towards the 12,000 side of the power spectrum making it the best-in-class for towing in its category.
Additionally, the new F-150 Hybrid will also be equipped with a Pro Trailer electronically assisted towing guide, allowing users more comfort and control in backing up with their payload.
Worksite Warrior: On-board generator versatility
The new F-150 will sport a 7.2kW Pro Power Onboard Generator, available in multiple configurations depending on the offering. A 2.4kW generator will come standard on the PowerBoost Hybrid models, with the 7.2kW generator available as well.
All 2.4kW vehicles will have two 120-volt outlets, and the 7.2kW vehicles will get those as well as a 240-volt outlet. Heavy duty power-tools and equipment can run for over 85 hours on a single tank of fuel.
On the less laborious side of what the new F-150 can do, it is available with an interior Work Surface where the owner can use a full-size laptop comfortably, or make lunch breaks just a little more comfortable.
When Can I Buy One?
Ford has announced that the vehicles will begin manufacture Q4 2020, and will be available in showrooms before the year is out. The new 2021 Ford F-150 will come in at $28,950 in the entry level model, all the way up to $74,245 in the premium top end models. Similar offering structure as previous years will be offered (XL, Limited, King Ranch, etc.).
